Homemade Non-Toxic Bubble Bath

Who doesn’t like a good bubble bath? Taking a bath can be extremely therapeutic and relaxing…the only problem is that those bubbles can sometimes contain hidden ingredients that aren’t the greatest for our health or the environment. Let’s get the bad news out of the way, so we can get to the good news!

Okay, so bad news, like I said, when soaking in those bubbles, our skin absorbs the ingredients they contain, and a lot of them contain some not-so-great chemicals. Babies are even more susceptible to absorbing harmful chemicals through their skin, because their skin is much thinner and more delicate than an adults. This is why you hear a lot about avoiding chemicals when it comes to baby care products. However, I personally think this caution should extend to adult care products as well. Though our skin may be a bit thicker, we can still absorb these harmful chemicals when exposed to them, and that is not something we want!

Some of the most common chemicals that are considered to be toxic at some level in many store bought bath products are fragrance, phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde, 1,4 – dioxane, and oxybenzone. These guys are all no-no’s in terms of being somewhat toxic, and when used on a regular basis, they can wreak havoc on your health by causing issues such as allergies, skin irritation, organ toxicity, endocrine disruption, cancer, infertility, respiratory problems, headaches, nausea, skin tumors and lesions, and endometriosis…just to name a few. Gross. All five of these chemicals can be found in bubble bath, and to make matters worse, they are even commonly found in bubble baths that are labeled as “all-natural” and “organic”. Plus, these are just five harmful chemicals…the sad truth is that there are many more in a lot of those store bought bubble baths! Guys, I don’t know about you, but I would rather take a bath with no bubbles at all than risk all of these health issues…problem is, I love the bubbles – they make things so much more relaxing!

Ugh, okay, we got that bad news out of the way, now for some good news!!! You don’t have to skip the bubbles – I have a homemade recipe for you to make your very own non-toxic bubble bath that will have you soaking in the suds safely and comfortably! It’s SO easy to throw together, and it’s really fun, because you can scent it as you wish using essential oils. Or, if you prefer, you can leave it unscented – it’s all up to you! Let’s get to it!

HOMEMADE NON-TOXIC BUBBLE BATH

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Liquid Castile Soap (I use Dr. Bronner’s unscented and then use essential oils for fragrance, but you could also use a scented one and skip the oils, or use unscented and go for a fragrance free soak)
  • 1/2 cup Vegetable Glycerin (I use Aura Cacia’s organic Vegetable Glycerin, which can easily be found on Amazon here)
  • 1 Tbsp Aloe Vera Juice – this is optional, but it’s great for the skin…especially if you have any skin issues like eczema, etc.
  • 20-30 drops of essential oil of your choice.

Directions:

Put all the ingredients in a glass jar and shake it up real nice.

You’re good to go!  Add it to your next bath for a sudsy spa like experience that is actually beneficial for your health rather than harmful to it!  Enjoy! 🙂
