I was feeling crafty recently, so I decided to give painting wine glasses a try, and I’m so glad I did, because they turn out super cute.
I made quite a few different designs, and I love them all!
The actual painting of the wine glasses is really quite easy, and doesn’t take a ton of time. However, making these glasses dishwasher safe takes a bit of time…4-5 days to be exact! At any rate, it’s totally worth it, because these turn out SO darn cute.
Without further ado, let’s get to the wine glasses! Oh, one more quick note! You can use this process to paint any glass, so you can decorate candle holders, dishes, etc. I just decided on wine glasses, because I had a set of “blank” wine glasses that looked bare to me. 😁 However, I can assure you, anything that is glass in our house is now fair game as far as I’m concerned! 🙂
D.I.Y. PAINTED WINE GLASSES
Materials Needed:
- Wine glass
- Rubbing alcohol
- Enamel Paint – I use Folk Art Enamels
- Stencil (optional)
- Sharpie Marker
- Paint Brush
- Q-Tips
- toothpicks
Instructions:
1.) First, you want to wash your wine glass with soap and water and rinse well. After this, you want to rub the wine glass down with rubbing alcohol. Just wet a dishrag with rubbing alcohol and rub it over the glass. Let dry for 15 minutes.
2.) As your glass is drying, gather all your materials together.
I had a helper decide to hang out and supervise…this is optional. 😉
3.) When the glass has dried, you want to draw your design on the glass with a sharpie marker. You can do this with a stencil, by tracing a design from a piece of paper placed in the glass, or freehand.
4.) You are now ready to start painting your design. Using any of your tools, paint the design onto the glass. For large areas, a brush works best. I actually used an old eyeliner brush for cleaner lines. For large dots, you can use a q-tip, and for smaller dots, you can use a toothpick or the end of your paintbrush.
5.) All done painting – it’s beautiful!!! 🙂
6.) Now comes the part that takes a while. You need to let your glass dry for a full four days. No, I’m not exaggerating – it’s gotta be a full four days.
7.) After those four days, place your glass in an unheated oven, and turn the heat to 350 degrees. Set a timer for 30 minutes. When the timer goes off, turn the heat off, but don’t open the oven. Allow the glasses to completely cool in the oven. By letting the glass warm up and cool down in the oven, you prevent it from breaking.
Your glass is now completed. It is dishwasher safe, so feel free to give it a go in the dishwasher (though I still only handwash mine just to be safe), and then drink away! 🙂 Cheers!
